Worship Faves

Awhile back, I wrote an article about modern worship and expressed how this era of worship music is by far my favorite of the many I’ve lived through and experienced over the last 70+ years. I’ve felt like the Holy Spirit wanted me to share some of the worship songs which have strongly impacted me of late. This article is my act of obedience!😇

This list is not even close to all of the songs in my worship playlist. They’re not even all of my favorites! What they are is a sampling of excellent songs covering a variety of musical styles.

Since most of the YouTube videos do not have the song’s lyrics subtitled in the video, I’ve also included the lyrics so you, too, can be edified by them. You might even want to sing along! Because song lyrics consume huge amounts of vertical space on a page, I’ve used some standard lyric notation throughout (e.g., “Chorus”, “repeat 2x”, etc.) to keep the article length manageable and somewhat mitigate your need to scroll endlessly.

Be blessed!

No One Like The Lord

Bethel Music featuring Jenn Johnson

This song is the top of my worship playlist in Apple Music. I get moved to tears every time I sing it!

Firm Foundation

The Belonging Co. featuring Cody Carnes

This one has been sustaining my wife and me through some tough times over the last year.

Verse 1
Christ is my firm foundation
The Rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaking
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
Cuz He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now?

1st Chorus
He won’t!
He won’t!

Verse 2
I’ve still got joy in chaos
I’ve got peace that makes no sense
So I won’t be going under
I’m not held by my own strength
Cuz I build my life on Jesus
He’s never let me down
He’s faithful in every season
So why would He fail now?

2nd Chorus
He won’t!
He won’t!
He won’t fail!
He won’t fail!
(repeat 1x)

Verse 1
(repeat 1x)

2rd Chorus
(repeat 1x)

Bridge
Rain came, wind blew,
My house was built on You.
I’m safe with You,
I’m gonna make it through!
(repeat 2x)

Oh, I’m gonna make it through
Cuz I’m standing strong on You
Oh, I’m gonna make it through
Cuz my house is built on You
Oh, oh, oh, oh
I’m gonna make it through!
Oh, oh, oh, oh
My house is built on You!

Verse 1
(repeat 1x)

He won’t!
He won’t!
He won’t fail!
He won’t fail!
(repeat 3x)

Outro
He won’t!
He won’t!
He won’t fail!
He won’t fail!
He won’t!
He won’t!
He won’t fail!
He won’t fail!
Oh, no, He won’t…

COUNT ‘EM

Brandon Lake

While I generally detest anything even hinting of rap music, both the music and lyrics of this rap-flavored rock anthem really get my spiritual adrenalin pumping!

Intro
Oh-oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh

Verse 1
You got thunder in Your vocal,
You got flames in Your eyes
You got wonder-working power
Pouring out of Your side
Checked the tomb all the way through,
The grave was empty inside
Ain’t no other pull
The greatest miracle of all time

You got power, demons cower
When they hear Your name called
You got power that still towers,
Make Goliath look small
You got power to devour
ny counterfeit roar
Even Your tongue is a sword,
Count up the score…

Chorus
You are the Lord, holy!
You are the Lord, holy!
You are the Lord, holy!
You are the Lord, holy!

Verse 3
All those funerals You ruined
When You made the dead rise
Heaven’s healer using spit and mud
To open blind eye
You got wonders I can’t number,
Couldn’t count if I tried
Called the doctor and the doctor said,
“I’m giving new life”

Tell your enemies the victory
Is already here
More than sixty thousand angels,
Just the tip of the spear
One day every knee will bow
And every heart will be Yours
This is the end of a war,
Count up the score…

Chorus

Bridge
How many enemies
Ended on bended knees,
Swallowed up in defeat?
Can’t count ’em!

How many raging seas
Opened in front of me?
How many victories?
Can’t count ’em!

How many prophecies
No one would dare believe?
Now it’s reality
Can’t count ’em!

How many broken men
Given a second chance?
See all the lifted hands
Can’t count ’em!

How many Thomases
Doubted Your promises
Standing here, now convinced?
Can’t count ’em!

How many hospitals
Said it’s impossible?
How many miracles?
Can’t count ’em!
How many paralyzed
Living a different life?
Go on and testify!
Can’t count ’em!

How many sinners saved?
How many bodies raised?
How many empty graves?
Can’t count ’em!

Oh-oh-oh, oh
Oh-oh-oh, oh

Chorus

Same God

Elevation Worship featuring Jonsal Barrientes

This one celebrates the immutable nature of our God. In Malachi  3:6a, God states, “For I am the Lord, I do not change.” Hebrews  13:8 proclaims, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.”

In summary, Jesus is still in the miracle-working business!

Verse 1
I’m calling on the God of Jacob
Whose love endures through generations
I know that You will keep Your covenant

I’m calling on the God of Moses
The One who opened up the ocean
I need You now to do the same thing for me
For me, for me

Chorus
O God, my God, I need You
O God, my God, I need You now
How I need You now
O Rock, O Rock of Ages
I’m standing on Your faithfulness
On Your faithfulness

Verse 2
I’m calling on the God of Mary
Whose favor rests upon the lowly
I know with You all things are possible
I’m calling on the God of David
Who made a shepherd boy courageous
I may not face Goliath but I’ve got my own giants!

Chorus
(repeat x2)

Bridge
It’s Your faithfulness I’m standing on
Never changes, never changes

You heard Your children then,
You hear Your children now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

You answered prayers back then
And You will answer now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

You were providing then,
You are providing now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

You moved in power then,
God, move in power now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

You were a healer then,
You are a healer now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

You were a Savior then,
You are a Savior now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

Chorus
(repeat x2)

Outro
You’re the same God
You’re the same God
This is Who we worship tonight, yeah
He’s the same, He’s the same
O God, how I need You
How I need You now

You freed the captives then,
You’re freeing hearts right now
You are the same God,
You are the same God
You touched the lepers then,
I feel Your touch right now
You are the same God,
You are the same God

Never changes, oh forever
We feel You now
You are the same God,
You are the same God
How we need You now

I’m calling on the Holy Spirit
Almighty River, come and fill me again
Come and fill me again
Come and fill me again

Bless God

Cody Carnes

Psalm 34:1 says, “I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” This song is all about praising God in the middle of our life circumstances, good and not-so-good.

Verse 1
Blessed are those who run to Him
Who place their hope and confidence
In Jesus
He won’t forsake them!

Blessed are those who seek His face
Who bend their knee and fix their gaze
On Jesus
They won’t be shaken

Chorus
Come on and praise the Lord with me
Sing if you love His name!
Come on and lift your voice with me
He’s worthy of all our praise!

Come on and bring your offering
Sing if you’ve known His grace!
Come on and lift up your holy hands
He’s worthy of all our praise!

Verse 2
Blessed are those who walk with Him
Whose hearts are set on pilgrimage with Jesus
They’ll see His glory

Blessed are those who die to live
Whose joy it is to give it all for Jesus
And for Him only
Oh Jesus
All for Your glory

Chorus

Bridge
Bless God when my hands are empty
Bless God with a praise that costs me
Bless God when nobody’s watching
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God when the weapon’s forming
Bless God when the walls are falling
Bless God ’cause He goes before me
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God for He holds the vict’ry
Bless God for He’s always with me
Bless God for He’s always worthy
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God in the sanctuary
Bless God in the fields of plenty
Bless God in the darkest valley
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God when my hands are empty
Bless God with a praise that costs me
Bless God when nobody’s watching
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God when the weapon’s forming
Bless God when the walls are falling
Bless God ’cause He goes before me
Every chance I get
I bless Your name

Bless God for He holds the vict’ry
Bless God for He’s always with me
Bless God for He’s always worthy
Every chance I get
I bless Your name
(repeat x1)

Nothing Else

Cody Carnes & Kari Jobe

This is another by Brother Cody as he and his wife, Kari Jobe, ministered at the 2019 Passion conference. I’m blown away by the production value of this video because it seamlessly transitions across multiple stadium venues without a single hiccup in the audio.

This video subtitles the lyrics.

Gratitude

I Am They featuring Cheyenne Mitchell

I love this song because it intimately expresses 1 Thessalonians 5:18: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Verse 1
All my words fall short
I got nothing new
How could I express
All my gratitude?

Verse 2
I could sing these songs
As I often do
But every song must end
And You never do

Chorus
So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
‘Cause all that I have is a
Hallelujah, hallelujah

And I know it’s not much
But I’ve nothing else fit for a king
Except for a heart singing
Hallelujah, hallelujah

Verse 3
I’ve got one response
I’ve got just one move
With my arms stretched wide
I will worship You

Chorus

Bridge
So come on my soul,
Oh, don’t you get shy on me!
Lift up your song,
Cuz you’ve got a lion
Inside of those lungs
Get up and praise the Lord!
(repeat 2x)

Chorus

Goodness of God

Bethel Music featuring Jenn Johnson

As my last selection, I’d like to share what could be my personal theme song. God’s goodness has been the consistent thread woven throughout my life, no matter how closely I have followed. In the previous song, we expressed our thankfulness to Him. In this one, we celebrate His characteristic for which I am the most thankful. You can read more on this topic in a previous article I’ve written.

Verse 1
I love You, Lord
Oh, Your mercy never fails me
All my days, I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
Oh, I will sing
Of the goodness of God

Chorus
Cause all my life
You have been faithful
And all my life
You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing
Of the goodness of God

Verse 2
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
And in darkest night
You are close like no other
I’ve known You as a Father
I’ve known You as a Friend
And I have lived
In the goodness of God, yeah

Chorus

Bridge
Cuz Your goodness is running after,
It’s running after me!
Cuz Your goodness is running after,
It’s running after me
With my life laid down,
I’m surrendered now
I give You everything!
Cuz Your goodness is running after,
It’s running after me!
(repeat 1x)

Final Chorus
And all my life
You have been faithful
And all my life
You have been so, so good
With every breath
That I am able
Oh, I’m gonna sing
Of the goodness of God!
I’m gonna sing, I’m gonna sing

Cuz all my life
You have been faithful
And all my life
You have been so, so good
With every breath
That I am able
Oh, I’m gonna sing
of the goodness of God!
Oh, I’m gonna sing
Of the goodness of God!
